Marvel has 26 new titles shipping out this week. I would highlight “Avengers #17.” It’s written by Jason Aaron and drawn by David Marquez. The description reads “The final fate of Dracula! The Avengers vs. Ghost Rider?! Blade vs. the Shadow Colonel! And the world of the Marvel U vampires will be changed forever. Who will be the new Lord of the Damned?”

DC Comics has only 10 titles shipping out this week. I would highlight “Naomi #3.” It is written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Jamal Campbell. The description reads “A brand-new character in the DC Universe comes into focus as Naomi confronts the one person in her small town she is convinced knows the secret of her mysterious adoption and her obsession with Superman. The truth is going to change both her and the DC Universe forever. The secret of Naomi opens the door to an enormous reveal you will not want to miss.”

Marvel has 25 new books out this week. One of the new series launching this week is The Magnificent Ms. Marvel. This new series is being written by Saladin Ahmed. Ahmed also wrote Black Bolt, which won the 2018 Eisner Award for Best New Series. The Magnificent Ms. Marvel stars Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel). She is a teenage Pakistani American, and she became the first Muslim character to headline a Marvel comic series in her first solo series launched in 2014. Kamala, along with Miles Morales, are some of the defining new characters of the next generation of Marvel heroes.

DC Comics only has 12 new books out this week. They really need to publish more each week to compete better with Marvel. Personally, I read more DC and prefer their content right now, but Marvel is continuously dominating the market because they have a larger selection to buy each week. So I’m going to highlight “Superman #9” for this week since I love Superman and this series is one with a lot of impact.

“Watchmen” 10 Year Anniversary

10 Years Ago on March 6, 2009, the Zack Snyder (“Man of Steel“, “Batman v. Superman“) directed “Watchmen” released into theaters. Now that movie was very long at well over 2 hours and the reception was divisive. However, the source material is very well regarded. It was a commercial and critical success to say the least.

Alan Moore, who also wrote “V For Vendetta,” wrote the original “Watchmen” comic series which was published by DC Comics from September 1986 to October 1987. It has since been collected in a single volume edition which I got for Christmas 2 years ago. I wanted to finally read it after hearing about it so much. I also wanted to read it because DC Comics recently launched Doomsday Clock, a new 12-issue series that is meant to be a direct sequel to the original “Watchmen.” Doomsday Clock is still ongoing and “Doomsday Clock #9” hits your local comic store today.

In addition to Doomsday Clock, HBO is set to premiere a “Watchmen” TV show later this year. HBO hasn’t released much at all about the show so far. I have no idea how much it will pull from the original story, but I’m excited for it. Unlike some networks/services, I think HBO does a good job prioritizing quality over quantity. “Watchmen” is my most anticipated new TV show of 2019. I hope it lives up to the properties’ history.

So I chose “Prisoner X #1” as my Marvel pick of the week. I partly chose it since well I had to. It’s the only new Marvel comic this week I’ve read yet. I also chose it because it was really good, and I’m not sure I expected it to be so good? I would put it up there with “The Amazing Nightcrawler #1” as my favorite first issues of these Age of X-Man series. There’s still one more Age of X-Man series yet to launch, Apocalypse & The X-Tracts next week.

There are so many great DC titles out this week, but I think I have to shine some light on the biggest of them all “Batman #66.” It was only a matter of time until I mentioned a Batman issue in one of these NCBD posts. This series is absolutely required reading. I am invested, and I will stick with it no matter what. Tom King is back as the writer on this issue now that the Flash crossover event is over.

Visit your local comic store to check out these titles and many more.

My Marvel pick of the week is “Daredevil #2.” This new Matt Murdock ongoing series launched earlier this month, so you won’t have much to catch up on. This series is a great reminder that although Netflix cancelled a great TV adaptation of Daredevil and his world, we’ll always have the comics to read for more of Daredevil’s story. Also, Netflix really sucks for cancelling all of its Marvel shows, but that’s the streaming wars (Netflix v. Disney +) for you.

My DC choice of the week is “Shazam! #3.” I have read the first two issues of this series, and I have been very impressed. I was so impressed that I eagerly checked for this issue at my comic store last week just to find out that it wasn’t out until this week…It’s a very great move for DC to have an ongoing Shazam! series in stores now because I’m sure the interest in these characters will skyrocket once the feature film adaptation premieres on April 5th. I really hope that movie lives up to the source material because this series is off to a great start.

Reviewing “The Amazing Nightcrawler #1”

This New Comic Book Day (2/20/19) I visited my local comic store, Heroes Wanted, and picked up new a Marvel release, “The Amazing Nightcrawler #1.” This is the first issue of one of the six new limited series included in the ongoing Age of X-Man event. The Amazing Nightcrawler is the third series to launch for Age of X-Man so far.I am aware of my DC bias when buying comics, so I decided to buy Marvel this week.

Kurt Wagner AKA Nightcrawler is described in this issue as “Teleporter, wall-clinger, X-Man. Most famous man in the world.” Other characters like Meggan, Celeste Cuckoo, etc. get brief description boxes too which a reader who is new to some of these characters (me) can be grateful for.

Kurt and Meggan are currently costarring in a film together. I love the details in Kurt’s dressing room where he has movie posters on his wall of films like “Titanic” where he is the male lead in the poster instead of Leo. It’s both a funny detail and an indicator of how accomplished he is as an actor.

Of the three Age of X-Man series that have launched so far I think this might be my favorite. The others aren’t bad, but I just really like Kurt as a character. I also love movies so I like that he’s an actor and a part of that world. This is just the first of five issues in this limited series. I assume the next issue will deal with the consequences of what Kurt and Meggan did at the end of this issue.
